Often called “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays is one of the most exciting and challenging shooting sports out there. With its constantly changing target presentations and natural outdoor settings, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite among both beginners and seasoned shooters.
So how does it work?
A typical sporting clays course consists of 10 to 15 shooting stations, each offering a unique pair of targets. These clay targets are thrown to mimic the flight patterns of birds or running rabbits—flying high overhead, crossing fast from side to side, or bouncing along the ground.
Basic Rules to Know:
-
At each station, shooters will usually face a pair of clay targets. These may be:
-
Report pairs (the second target is thrown after you fire at the first),
-
True pairs (both targets launched at the same time),
-
or Following pairs (the second target is thrown after a short delay).
-
-
Each shooter gets two shots per station, and scoring is typically one point per broken target.
-
Stations are clearly marked, and shooters move through the course in a set order.
-
Safety is key: Eye and ear protection is required, and firearms must remain unloaded and open until you’re in the shooting stand.
Whether you’re here to compete or just have a great time outdoors, sporting clays offers variety, challenge, and a whole lot of fun.
