Trap shooting is one of the oldest and most popular shotgun sports—and once you get the hang of the rules, it’s easy to see why! At its core, trap is all about quick reflexes, solid fundamentals, and having a great time challenging yourself (and your friends) to bust fast-moving clay targets flying away from you.
Here’s how it works:
A standard round of trap consists of 25 targets thrown from a single machine, called a trap house, located about 16 yards in front of the shooters. The targets are launched one at a time, flying away at unpredictable angles—left, right, or straight out.
There are five shooting stations in a semicircle behind the trap house. Shooters rotate through all five positions during the round, taking five shots at each station.
The Rules:
-
Only one shot per target is allowed.
-
Shooters must load one shell at a time, unless shooting doubles.
-
A round consists of five shots per station for a total of 25.
-
The target is launched when the shooter calls “Pull.”
-
Eye and ear protection is required at all times.
-
Firearms must be carried unloaded with actions open between shots and when changing stations.
Trap shooting is easy to learn, endlessly fun, and a great way to build confidence and skill. Whether you’re new to the sport or looking for a great group activity, Amelia Shotgun Sports is the perfect place to give trap a try!
